Activity Details
The Jewish Quarter of Girona is one of the best-preserved medieval Jewish quarters in Europe. Known locally as “El Call,” this area was home to around 1,000 residents during the Middle Ages, making it one of the most important Jewish communities in Spain’s history.
Tour Route
- As you explore the narrow, charming streets of the Jewish Quarter —birthplace of Nahmanides, the medieval Kabbalistic philosopher—, you’ll visit the locations where the city’s three synagogues once stood and learn about Jewish traditions and customs.
- You will also visit the Museum of Jewish History (tickets included) to gain deeper insight into their way of life. Afterwards, your guide will lead you through the maze-like alleys while recounting the story of the expulsion of the Jews in 1492, a decree that ended 600 years of coexistence.
- By the end of this tour, you’ll have a richer understanding of the Jewish legacy in Girona and a broader view of the history of the region and Spain as a whole.
