Ermita de Les Alegries

Mare de Déu de Les Alegries church, firstly as a romanic building (a present style in Costa Brava), is the third oldest in Lloret de Mar after Ermita de Sant Quirze and Sant Romà first parish.

It was built in the borrowed pieces of land by Madona Sicarda (Lloret Madame) and it was consecrated the 8th of January in 1079 by Girona's bishop (Madame partner) during a ceremony where she assisted with her two sons.

Les Alegries offers a big repertoire of traditions and legends, like one that said that if a young women throw a thyme branch between the bars of the window and reach the hand of the picture of Virgin Marie will get married in brief. Another one told the story of Andreu "the carrier", that one night, for his surprise, saw the little church full of died and devoted souls listening a mass.

The building of the new Sant Romà parish, at the beginning of XVIth century leave the oldest romanic and rural church in secondary place, becoming to known as "old church" or "Old Mare de Deu" until the XVIIIth century when definitely receive the name of Ermita de Mare de Déu de Les Alegries.

In a secluded corner and not much exploited as a tourist attraction, it is an obligatory visit if you stay some days in Costa Brava or in Lloret de Mar. In addition, during the year are celebrated some events like the floral contest that take place in the middle of March, or some guided visits on February and March saturdays.
