Formigues islands

The Formigues islands are an archipelago made up of four islands and twelve reefs that owe their name to the silhouette they form, similar to that of small insects. They are located between Palamós and Calella de Palafrugell and administratively belong to both. On Formiga Gran island there is a lighthouse that facilitates navigation in the area.

Its surface, formed by rocks of igneous origin, has practically no vegetation, and its low height means that on days when the sea is rough, the water practically covers the rocks. The submerged part of the Formigas Islands is characterised by a series of underwater caves and by the presence of numerous marine fauna.
