Sant Pere de Rodes monastery

The Sant Pere de Rodes monastery is an impressive monumental complex located in the Verdera mountain, in the heart of Cap de Creus. Nearby, we also find the village of Santa Creu and the Verdera castle, contemporary to the monastery.

Archaeological work has been able to document pre-existing constructions dating from the 6th century, but the building as we know it today was built between the 10th and 11th centuries. It quickly became a great centre of pilgrimage and the most important monastery in the whole Empúries county, thus accumulating a great deal of power and influence.
It can be divided into three main architectural spaces: the cloister, the church and the monastic buildings. The most important element of the complex is the church, one of the main references of Catalan Romanesque architecture.

From the 14th century onwards, the monastery began to suffer a slow and gradual decline, mainly due to the epidemics and war conflicts that affected the area. In 1797 it was finally abandoned.

If you wish to visit this imposing monastic complex, you have the option of doing so on your own, or hiring a private or group guided tour. In the same space you will also find a restaurant, which will allow you to extend your visit and enjoy the local products.
